Music Series | Best Remixes of 2020 (IMO)
I know it’s been awhile, but Spotify has been hitting hard with these remixes from my favorite producers which led to discovering new music, AND I HAD TO SHARE OK?!
so,
1. “rangerover [Vegyn Remix]”
— Porches, Vegyn
Honestly, not a fan of original Porches track…BUT THE REMIX?! On repeat maybe 3x before I switch it up once/twice, then do it again. . .
“How do you sleep at the end of the day?
When you close your eyes, all you see is her face” 💘
Gets me in my feels, in a way I don’t mind. Ha!
Porches’ “rangerover” is a bonus track from his latest album, Ricky Music (2020). Though, again, not a fan, I do love the recreated version I’m shouting out today. Brought to us by London-based producer and Frank Ocean collaborator, Vegyn!
Worth checking out:
• “There's Nothing Left 2 Make U Stay” (2020) — Vegyn
• “Underwater” (2016) — Porches
2. “Criminals [The Avalanches Remix]”
— DMA’S, The Avalanches
Same as above about the original: because [again] it’s now a totally different song. Now you get that nostalgic, vinyl feel with The Avalanches sample-wizardry that just ✨muah✨— perfects it.
Straight fire remix from the Australian electronic DJ/producers behind “Since I Left You” and “Because I’m Me” (just to name a few of their other hits, casually).
“I don’t need you / You don't need me
To figure out — to figure out / Where you wanna be”
And when 4:20 hits… FYYY-RRRRE🔥 (no pun intended, but I mean…) Also, it is a 7-minute song so, JOT THAT DOWN.
3. “Les Fleurs [Star Slinger Remix]”
— Minnie Riperton, Star Slinger
Minnie Riperton’s “Les Fleurs” is already amazing. Soulful, beautiful perfection. How could it get any better, you ask?
**Star Slinger has entered the chat**
Electronic music producer, Star Slinger, adds his touch for that extra ‘punch’ you wouldn’t think could make Minnie’s song [dare I say] better?? Nah. Just more powerful… [see 1:32 👀].
“Ring all the bells, sing and tell the people everywhere that the flower has come !” 💥
••••Bonus••••
“Atomic Bomb [William Onyeabor vs. Hot Chip]”
— William Onyeabor, Hot Chip
This ain’t that new-new (it’s from 2014) but a total fave, because it introduced me to something so, so worth it: William Onyeabor. I got into Onyeabor a few years ago (…you should too!), and this is the remix that got me in the music wormhole I voluntarily stayed in and questioned ever escaping.
Yes, I know — this is a remix. But being the curious person I am, I looked up Onyeabor's original track, which led to listening to EVERYTHING from that album (Atomic Bomb, 1978), his 2013 compilation album (Who Is William Onyeabor?), all whilst earning about his whole freakin’ career when I watched his YouTube documentary, Fantastic Man (2014).
And indeed, he was a fantastic man.
And I, am still a single woman. (10/10 recommend)
Let me just say: ALL HIS MUSIC IS SO FUCKIN GOOD, I don’t have to sell you on it. I mean, no one is paying me for this passion!
The Nigerian musician was a synth-funk pioneer, and I will not be convinced otherwise.
“I want to realize, man; The way I feel in me (how do you feel?) / I'm going to explode (You mean you're gonna to explode?)”
(OK, this one requires more context. Just listen to it… you’ll get it. Da funk.)
As always, I’m open to suggestions! Let me know what I missed in the comments below :)
