First!
”Tinsel” | Man Seeking Woman
—S2, Ep. 4 (2016)
T’was the first WO-Man Seeking … episode. And man, was it good!
I love the entire series. It’s very creative, relatable and funny. On that high, let me add: if you watched Dollface —you’ll see how shitty that is in comparison to this OG (aka: original gem; Man Seeking Woman).
MSW is not ‘watered down’ so you can connect+relate easily with the characters’ situations. Plus, it has the hilarious wildcard Eric André.
Anyway!
The “Tinsel” episode breaks away from the protagonist (Josh)’s love life to focus on his sister, Liz. It is also not all Christmas-y in the traditional sense. I mean, it is a surreal romantic comedy, after all.
To distract herself from a break up, she doubles down on her job —avoiding social interactions. You see! Relatable!
But one silent night, she meets someone… someone she’s known of for most of her life, as he is very well-known.
He’s successful, charming, and dare I say… JOLLY??!!
Yep. SANTA-fucking-CLAUS.
Red suit and all.
If you are not aware or just scanning through, I mentioned above Man Seeking Woman is a surreal comedy.
I love these shows for their unique take, using hyperbole in visual medium, to express common human emotion. Another way to help people understand what we ALL experience, can struggle to explain and should be open about.
[Disclaimer: Maturity, imaginations and a brain required!]
So, this show does what no one asked for… be a hilarious, holiday-themed ‘love’ story.
Weirdly enough, it become my go-to ‘starter episode’ to introduce my male friends to watch the show. After all, it is really all about a man (Josh). . .
SN: Having Eric André & the lead, Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, This Is The End), had my homies breeze through the series! You’re welcome ladies. And scientists?
“Comparative Religion” | Community
—S1, Ep. 12 (2009)
The first Christmas episode of the series! It is also their first fight…physically, with others. 😅
After Shirley asks the study group to attend her Christmas party, they learn their new “diverse little family” has totally different beliefs.
So, as the Dean’s over-the-top ways to not offend anyone —going as far as dressing up as “non-denominational Mr. Winter” (or as Shirley puts it: “jamming his PC-ness down [our] throat.”) —the witty comedy tackles cultural differences.
Considering it discusses all religions within the group, it is one hilarious episode that had multiple memes come from it!
It further establishes the group’s strong bond for its six seasons (#AndAMovie!)
So watch, take notes on real friendships, maybe even sing “Oh, Christmas Troy!” while decorating those loved ones this Christmas. And please, PLEASE send me that footage.
Other Notable Christmas Episode:
“Regional Holiday Music” —S3, Ep. 10
“A Very Solar Holiday Opposites Special” | Solar Opposites
—S2, SPECIAL (2021)
In true Rick and Morty fashion, this special episode has the aliens, full of Christmas cheer, embark on a Ready, Play One-style adventure to find out WTF is Christmas?
And through the hysterically-horrific journey [they were initially excited for], jump through classic holiday movies of our past! Like 1996’s family comedy “Jingle All the Way” (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sinbad)
What’s funny is they not only lose their holiday spirit in the process, but it’s cause of the realization of BS we consumed back in those days, in celebration of capitalism “Christmas.” Great stuff!!!
In the end, they do learn what Christmas is. And the so-called Grinch of the group, the Pupa, proves to be the only one who truly knew the TRUE meaning of Christmas all along.✨
“Where The Hell Is Brent?” | Santa Inc.
—S1, Ep. 1 (2021)
That NEW-NEW. On HBO-ho-ho.
I love a good adult animation to place light in the dark times we live in. Takes out the ego and just comes across more honest.
It reminded me of Crossing Swords *ba-dum🥁 tss* —the show. But like, current day.
Yes, there’s the boss man Santa… but the entire comedic series lightly vails the issues woman still face in America today. As well as casually mentioning other American political issues —in jokes of course!
Stars Sarah Silverman & Seth Rogen‘s voices/humor!
