    S13E10: "The Plight Before Christmas"

    The holiday episode oddly coincided with the theme of my last post on Substack. I cried —which is a weird reaction to a fun, animated show. But they were happy tears!

    The episode was still strong comedically, just had this sweet reminder of understanding, listening, and being there for loved ones —despite all the chaotic curveballs life can throw at you.

    Family is everything. 💖

    A late watch for me, but what a good one! Despite the critics…

    ABOUT nancy AT HOME:
    When it comes to shows I watch, it’s like I’m studying. Cuz I don’t waste time on things I’m not learning something from and a writer myself.

    Another fun fact is that Dan Harmon is one of my favorite TV writers, due to his genius way of merging humanity + comedy in his writing style —whilst also being a charming, self-deprecating narcissist. Something he openly admits/talks about.

    This episode’s summary did as it said by “wrinkling my brain” —in the most fantastic way. Troy would get it. Maybe.

    Since the rise of Rick & Morty ‘bandwagon fans,’ meta Reddit nerds and Twitter trolls have been critiquing Harmon’s writing in recent seasons.

    This episode, shots are fired at them and the other ‘according to critics’ critics.

    They’re burning the creators [Harmon and Justin Roiland] tf out. But lessons are learned as the story goes…

    (See: Dan Harmon’s “Story Circle” —a model he adopted + simplified from Joseph Campbell’s writing structure of the ‘hero’s journey’; a style that covers aspects of being human)

    Episode 7 also calls out the ‘bigger’ players [execs] that continue to give notes on a show they probably don’t watch/understand. With the help of a couple new notable characters: Joe Campbell* & Jan**

    (not another NANCY note: First off, all these people obviously never watched or understood Community.

    So they don’t know how great that was for its time and its relevance to this day.

    Harmon was fired from the show [season 4] for “creative conflicts.” This then affected the show’s writing and ratings —cuz the writing was “Britta-ed.” (IYKYK)

    Second? “Critics” must not know that he went on to create a live comedy podcast [HARMONTOWN —recommend] that touches on that whole mess (and more) before he was subsequently re-hired for his own show for season 5 & 6.

    SO, DO YOU WANT THIS FOR R&M?! Let the man work, you guys.)

    Dan has this incredibility creative way of exploring his own emotions and thoughts in the funniest ways within his writing. So, of course it leads to the appropriately punny “Analyze Piss” episode right after.

    *Joe Campbell, an animated version of the Joseph Campbell (…so talk about meta! Harmon uses an animated version of the writer that inspired his own work)

    **Jan, Story Lord’s creator (get it? It’s a mash-up of Justin + Dan)
