It’s hot, girl. This summer, like DAMN 🥵
I am reporting from Texas, but I mean… bitch’s record-breaking hot everywhere.
To help you keep cool the only way I can [fo’free], here’s a few recommendations (i.e. distractions) while you’re indoors + online!
😎
(words are fun!)

—or not. I do have other content 🙃
drink!
*if you can/do.
I have the perfect summer cocktail for this heat. And it's LOW-CALORIE!
Now before you say, "That's just a vodka/water, Nance. That ain't new" –LET ME EXPLAIN. Or just jump to the recipe for the secret ingredient. Won't affect me.
Back to those who enjoy my nonsense stories of how I find things:
You're amazing, I love you, and my story begins on Bumble 🐝
...A few years ago (B.C.), I joined the dating app and the only good thing that came out of that was this cocktale. (hahaha. I could not help it!)
So! About a month or so after seeing this fella, he invites me over for game night. I had no idea his mom was going to be there, so I immediately needed a drink.
OK, fine. I would have wanted one anyway. Still, it helped. But all homeboy had was vodka, and if you know me, you know that's NOT my choice of liquor.
*NOTE: This was before TikTok, the pandemic, and the "Great" seltzer take-over. Keep that in mind!
Anyway, he insisted I try "his recipe" that would cover the whole vodka taste. And as a woman who went to college in the U.S., I knew you can't turn down a free drink (JOKE!!! but fr, NOmeansNO)
What he made tasted like what I can only describe as... a Manson-style kool-aid. Shit was dangerous-ly good; and yes, he happened to be white. But! My point is... Irishmen know their booze.
I kid! He might have just been an alcoholic; been so long, idk/remember.
I still make this drink to this day, because it's as refreshing as a CapriSun on a hot summer day in the 90s, when you couldn't drink booze. Cuz you were a child.
And as easy as it is to drink, it's even easier to make. Here's the recipe!
Ingredients:
- A clean cup
–because you're an adult (21+) - Water (H20)
- Ice (cubed or crushed frozen water)
- Vodka
–I go with Tito's but they're not sponsoring me, so DO YOU - MiO
–yes, the no calorie water enhancer. Any flavor of your choosing!
That's it.
Instructions:
- Fill cup with ice
- Add vodka to about "3/4" of that ice-filled cup
- Fill rest of the cup with water
- Add a single squirt of MiO
- Mix and ENJOY!
Pro Tip: You can step out with your chosen MiO flavor to stick to the low-calorie cocktail, which tastes better than any squeeze of a lime in a vodka/water.
It's also fun cuz I like to assume it looks like I'm "Forget-Me-Now"—ing myself.
(then judge/dodge creeps accordingly)
Anyway. Stay hydrated, my friends!
I skipped a lot more weeks than I thought, so here's all I have liked from whenever I posted last!
Aphrodite // Phèdre
- Phèdre is an experimental indie/electronic duo. And I'm obsessed with this song. Even more so now after watching the video from 2012🤯
It weirdly reminded me of the first music video I was in, involuntarily (2010). Different genre tho.
Anywho! I also found this mellowed down "remix" that's still 10/10 to my ears. But nothing compares to the extra vibe you get from the video, so check out the YouTube Playlist above.W.I.G.T.S. // S.Maharba
- British producer S.maharba came back with more tunes after a few years hiatus with Cold Friend. But this song is from his previous album lol.
"W.I.G.T.S." is a beautifully dark, hypnotic, electronic track. And it took me finding the video for this post to know it stood for When I Go To Sleep. Even though those were the only lyrics I knew.(side note: can we all just chill on the acronyms?) - Then, as any real journalist, I obsessed about which song the sample came from. So I went to whosampled → YouTube → Wikipedia
CUT-TO:
An ~hour later, I had found The Applejacks (not cereal) released the original track, titled "I Go To Sleep” in 1965!
AND! And, get this: it was written by Ray Davies of The Kinks.
Took me so long cuz I felt I had to listen to every version over the last 57 years.
To be fair, not a lot. But I hit REPEAT a LOT. You know, that good new jams feeling.
Anyway, I love all the re-imaginations of the song! Time well spent in the search for truth.+ these songs below are a vibe, too!
(–yeah, kinda messed up going on that hour-journey for one song. Just know they're good! And are included in the YouTube playlist above 👍)Gamesofluck // Parcels
The Seaside // The Lazy Eyes
Slow // Twin Shadow
The Rip // Portishead
Broke & Fun // Star Slinger
BONUS!
Running Up That Hill // Placebo
Because the hype after Stranger Things for Kate Bush's classic comeback; I wanted to share my personal favorite version of it.
...aaand I was a big Placebo fan in HS. *emo hair flip*
Their music STILL hits like those [hair] bangs, man💘
our flag means death
This show is not only incredibly well-written, it is what audiences deserve. Cuz it's not a watered-down, basic-ass story we've heard repeatedly. And a reminder that love is LOVE💓
I also just love Taika Waititi's creative mind. And all him and fellow New Zealander Jemaine Clement create. It's always so honest, goofy, and relevant.
On that note –should I move to New Zealand? Anyway! Here's a few other shows these geniuses have created:
- What We Do In The Shadows
(hot tip: check out their 2014 movie first! Both gentlemen are in it, as vampires.) - Wellington Paranormal
- Flight of the Conchords
as we see it
This show is so good. It's a dramedy about roommates on the autism spectrum, played authentically by actors who are also on the spectrum. I looked it up after hearing Rick Glassman's interview on The Daily Show. –which I recommend watching, over the trailer.
abbott elementary
Funniest show I've watched that's on network television (ABC). Check it out on Hulu!
The mockumentary sitcom is smart, funny, and I may have already re-watched 3x. It's about teachers, so obviously sent to all my teacher friends. They relate.
the rehearsal
Nathan Fielder takes "PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT" to a LEVEL. I will only say you'll like this is you liked Nathan For You. So if you don't know about neither show; just pass. Nathan's comedy is...an acquired taste.
Last, a quick shoutout to ones I enjoyed during like, living my life/being home:
